Willowdean (‘Dumplin’), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, signs up for her mom’s Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.

Directed by Anne Fletcher, DUMPLIN’ follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), who’s known as Will to her friends and Dumplin’ to her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. In her small Texas town, Will confidently ignores comments about her weight and listens to Dolly Parton songs obsessively. But when she decides to enter her mother’s pageant in protest, her bold move encourages other contestants to follow in her footsteps, redefining the town’s traditions in the process.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – ‘Patti Cake$’s’ Danielle Macdonald stars as the teenage daughter of a former beauty queen who signs up for her mom’s pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow in her footsteps.

Netflix has picked up Dumplin’, the comedic drama that pairs Jennifer Aniston with Patti Cakes$ star Danielle Macdonald.

Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) directed the feature in which music is a prominent factor, with Dolly Parton recording new versions of her classic songs with collaborators such as Sia and Miranda Lambert in addition to six new original songs co-written by Parton and Linda Perry.

The film will be released later this year on Netflix in the U.S. and select international territories. It will also be released in select U.S. theaters. The debut musical number, “Here I Am,” a reworking of Parton’s 1971 song, will be released Sept. 14.

Odeya Rush (Goosebumps), Dove Cameron (Descendants), Harold Perrineau (Lost), Bex Taylor-Klaus and Ginger Minj are also in the movie that adapts Julie Murphy’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. Kristin Hahn wrote the script.

Michael Costigan, Mohamed AlRafi of 50 Degrees Entertainment, Hahn and Trish Hofmann produced. Aniston and Danny Nozell exec produce.

In addition to Sia and Lambert, artists involved with the original motion picture soundtrack include Alison Krauss, Elle King, Mavis Staples, Miranda Lambert, and Rhonda Vincent, among others. Aniston and Macdonald also collaborate on tracks.

DEADLINE – Odeya Rush is set to co-star along side Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$) in Dumplin’, a music-driven comedy à la Pitch Perfect and Bring It On directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses)

The pic centers on Willowdean (Macdonald), nicknamed Dumplin, a confident, plus-sized, teen who, to spite her erstwhile beauty pageant queen mom (Aniston), enlists in a local pageant. What starts as an impulsive one-day protest snowballs as Will inadvertently becomes the inspiration for a ragtag group of teenage outcasts joining the pageant.

Rush will play Ellen ‘El’ Dryver, Willowdean’s best friend, who complicates things when she decides to enter the beauty pageant across Will.

Kristin Hahn wrote the script, which she based on Julie Murphy’s 2015 YA novel, and will produce the project with Michael Costigan (Ghost In The Shell), who will produce via his COTA Films banner.

CAA and UTA Independent Film Group are representing domestic.

Rush can be seen in the soon-to-be released film Lady Bird, the directorial debut pic from Greta Gerwig, which A24 is releasing. She’s repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment.
